How She Creates - Collaboration

The Zine Squad is on the How She Creates Podcast today! We were so very excited to come together and talk collaboration with Caylee and Lauren. Any excuse to get together works well for Julia, Katie and I anyway!

You can listen to the podcast here.

As you may already know, How She Creates subscribers get presents straight to their inbox for each episode. Here is a peek at our present: collage sheets!

These are elements from past zines that we have put together in the hopes of them becoming useful jumping off points for your own art journals or zines. I decided to use them to make a spread in my daily diary.

Here is what I ended up with. I started by picking out the elements that spoke to me right away. I chose some that were made by Katie (the moons!) and some by Julia (the pen work!). The two women are from my spreads and I was naturally attracted to them.

It was really fun to revisit these elements and make them say something completely new!

If you play along on Instagram please tag the Zine Squad so we can see!

Watercolour set unboxing

Last week, I found a new (to me) company that makes watercolours: Mungyo. They seem to be a Korean company. I bought a stunning set of 48 half pans. I have been eyeing all the Prima Marketing sets recently (thank you EmK), but they are expensive to have shipped here in Beijing, which takes away from their appeal (i.e. inexpensive sets for the quality). So I thought I'd resist and buy a good quality set here. When I found this set, I was super excited.

I shared a photo on Instagram and Lotte requested an unboxing...so here it is! Please excuse my finger pressing the start and end buttons!

Get Messy Season of Gifts flipthrough and a giveaway!

Hello! Before we move on to Get Messy 2017, I thought I'd share a flipthrough of my Season of Gifts journal. I debated about how to bind these pages that I left loose so that I could run them through my sewing machine. Finally, I decided to cheat and use paperclips to hold it together!

Here's a closer look at the "binding"! Eventually, I may glue the facing backings together to make the whole thing more solid. Maybe.

I can't wait for the new Season to start! You will love this one, I promise. In the meantime, if you are interested in Get Messy but unsure if you want to commit, then check out my Instagram for a chance to win a year long membership. Yeah, for real!

Still here, slipping photos in pockets

This project is the reason I haven't blogged in a while. I just finished putting together my 2016 album. I still have to add the journaling and embellish, but all photos are printed, all cards are chosen and all are in their little pockets. It feels so good! The July to December album covers our move to Beijing, adapting to new city, new friends, visits from old friends, birthdays, Halloween, my trip to Tokyo/HK, and our Christmas Down Under. Too much good stuff not to complete this project.

Now I am just thinking about how I will share these spreads. Maybe I will share my 2 favourite spreads per month here when I will be truly done. What say you? Are you still doing Project Life or pocket scrapbooking?

The Empowerment Zine

I must start off with an apology to Katie: I keep using neon watercolours that don't show up on her scanner, so she has to re-photograph my spreads each time. Sorry Katie! Everyone else, welcome to the Empowerment zine that the Zine Squad made for Judith. Julia, Katie and I enlisted the help of Sarah for this zine and the theme was empowerment because Judith was going through a rough patch last year.

In the photo above, my page is on the right. I cut out a circle and collaged some tissue paper around the hole.

I drew a flaming heart on some Dura-lar and I used packing tape to stick in the middle of the hole so it looks like it's floating.

This is probably one of my favourite spreads ever. Thank you Beyoncé.

And in the images above, my page is on the left, next to a page by Sarah. I love the message from this zine and it makes all of us happy that Judith loved it! Please take a moment to check out everyone's pages :)

Get Messy Season of Gifts || 06

Well, here goes, my last post for the Season of Gifts! I just loved this Season, it felt good to change my approach and use fabric and my sewing machine. For my final spread, I decided to use some of the amazing Christmas cards and letters that I was lucky enough to receive.

There are Christmas cards, postcards, letters, tags and lots of stamps in this spread.

How incredible do these look all collaged together?

That glassine pocket holds a tiny booklet made by my friend Kelley.

Some of my personal symbols found their way on this page: the butterfly.

The Moon.

Cats!

The other spread I'd like to share is the one I made for my tutorial. It is in my huge A3.

I loved making all these faces. I hope you also enjoyed the tutorial.

Next week I will share my bound journal. It will be the last post for the 2016 CT!

I am grateful to be included in the 2017 CT. We are already working hard to bring you inspiration and creativity!

Color Blast | My Grey Matter

Last year, a few of us got together and formed a journaling circle. We each picked a colour and made a few pages in our journal before sending it out to the next person. We each got to work in different coloured journals and we ended up with everyone's art in our own. We called it Color Chaos (you can read all about it by clicking on the project name on the sidebar of my blog).

We had so much fun that we decided to carry on with this project. Some of us are returning, some artists are new. In the circle are Julia, Lauren Brown, Riet, Sarah, Lauren Blood and Moriah. We are calling the 2017 project Color Blast. Last time, my color was gold. This year it is grey.

Here is a look at the base for Grey Matter, before it went off on its journey. This journal is handmade with mixed media paper.

I like to start with an inventory of my color.

Most pages I kept blank or with minimal elements.

I want these elements to be a starting point for the others.

This spread was made during the airpocalypse we had here in Beijing.

Had to put a good skull inkblot in here...and Frida.

And Frida again.

Some washi tape that can be taken off it the person isn't inspired by it.

Last time, Katie had a color swatch page like this in her journal, which I love so I am borrowing her idea. I also like the idea of having everyone's signature.

And some Grey's Anatomy on the back cover (heh heh).

And there you have it. Grey Matter is already on its way to the next recipient and I am excited to receive my first color journal :) Please take a minute to check out everyone's journals by clicking their names in this post.

The Tropical Jungle zine

Oh yes! A Jungle themed zine was in the works for Melody. Julia, Katie and I wanted this zine to bring those feelings of humid jungles, of dark rich colours, of mystery and adventure. So we enlisted Moriah to participate with us.

This time, I wasn't the one to start the zine so it was fun to have some jumping off pages to work with. My page above is on the left and Julia's is on the right.

This zine was a chance for me to use some of the collage fodder I've had from various sources and travels. On the spread above, my page is on the left. I must confess I don't know who made the page on the right! But how I love it because I have actually been in that temple in Cambodia, I have a photo of me under those very roots. that was a bucket list event for me. The flamingo feather below is from my trip to Johanesburgh in April 2016.

The page with the zebra is mine. Melody is such a kind soul, I wanted to add this in the zine. I also wanted a little bit of whimsy!

This was a lot of fun to make, I love how lush and full the zine turned out, with lots to see and feel. Please take a look at everyone's pages by clicking on their names.

And thanks for visiting!

The New Awesome Ladies

Hello all! Yes, the Awesome Ladies Project has come into its own and become the Awesome Ladies website. The site is fresh and vibrant and Kristin has done a great job of turning this group into and inspiring and thriving community.

There are now different teams and groups to inspire you. I am in three teams :

Each of these teams feature different types of projects to inspire you throughout the year. Whether you are a scrapbooker, TN documenter, art journaler or a writer; you will find what you are looking for in this community.

Each of the Awesome Ladies is encouraged to make their own 2017 project. This is a project for you or about you, whatever strikes your fancy. Personally, I will be making a feminist quotes journal.

I'll be using this notebook to make art journal spreads that feature the most badass quotes by feminist artists, to inspire me to be all I can as a woman and as an artist.

The notebook I am using is a 5 x 5 one with different types of pages. Some are plain, other have circles or even colored paper.

I am very excited to see where this will take me. I have no minimum that I want to make and I am keeping my options open in terms of media. The paper is quite thin but I think I can make it work.

I'm calling this project V's Femquotes and I'll be sharing under that hashtag as well.

Today on the Awesome Ladies website, I am sharing my first Learn post. It is an Intention Journal, made from a gift bag. Become a member now and check it out!

Get Messy Season of Gifts || 05

This week I came back to my Season of Gifts journal feeling refreshed and nourished after our amazing vacation in Australia. Then the airpocalypse happened. We have been in a cloud of pollution and bad air. So this has affected my mood. My journal makes me happy though so I am glad for the refuge it is for me.

This week we were exploring what of our lives we have given. We have learned that we will not be going back to Canada after our Beijing affectation, we will be transferred to Shanghai until 2021.

Though I am happy for my husband and for us as a family, I couldn't help but feel that this means the end of my career as an archaeologist. Maybe I am wrong, maybe it's this funk; but it doesn't feel like there are many opportunities left for me professionally in my chosen field.

So that is what I have given of my life. Does it feel like a sacrifice? yes. Absolutely. It will never sit well with me. But I am also able to recognize the opportunities that this life has given me, not least of which is the chance to cultivate and develop my artistic side.

On a lighter note, I really enjoyed the look of the cut out hand that Nina shared on the Get Messy blog. So here is my take on it.

The fabric I used is one I have had in my stash for a long time. I love it.

As you may remember, flowers are symbol that I use a lot in my work as metaphors for gifts or blessings. The ornaments on the right come from a Christmas card we were given.

And I love love love the pop of colour that the cut up ribbon gives to my page!

I am so happy with what I have discovered in this Season. It's great to explore new mediums and techniques.
